.fr is the country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) for France, managed by [[1]].
Eligibility
- Individuals residing in the European Union, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein. Country and date of birth must be provided during registration.
- Legal entities registered in the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein (registration in France is not required).
- Registrants outside these countries may register via a trustee service provided by the registrar.
Domain Name Requirements
- Length: 3 to 63 characters
- Allowed characters: letters (a–z), digits (0–9), hyphen (-)
- Hyphen prohibited at the beginning, end, and at positions 3 and 4
- IDN support: yes (French characters)
Registration Period
- Minimum: 1 year
- Maximum: up to 10 years (depending on registrar)
Important Notes
- Email verification of the registrant is mandatory. Failure to verify results in domain suspension and potential deletion
- WHOIS privacy is not available. Date and place of birth for individuals are hidden
- Registration is only possible through an [registrar]
- Transfer between registrars: up to 8 days (standard), up to 22 days if contested
Restrictions
Registration of names identical or confusingly similar to the following is prohibited:
- The French Republic
- Territorial collectivities (regions, departments)
- State institutions and public services
